Cultural habits like that are prevalent across Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Southeast Asia. While I totally support greeting people with respect, as a kid I avoided it. Not out of disrespect, but being an extreme introvert, it just wasn't comfortable for me. It's understandable that some might misconstrue that.
