I believe that if people are going to comment, they should aim for specificity rather than offering vague or superficial remarks. A shallow comment can feel like a slap in the face to the writer. If you don't have anything meaningful to say, maybe it's better to say nothing at all.
This isn't a tit-for-tat comment exchange. Engagement should be genuine, and when you do comment, a little extra effort goes a long way in establishing a relationship. After all, your comments reflect on you as a writer. If I see someone consistently leaving surface-level comments, I'm likely to disengage from them.
What's more frustrating is when you put in the effort to read and comment thoughtfully on someone's work, and they reciprocate with a cursory comment or just a quick "clap." It feels insincere. And then they wonder why they're not getting engagement or earning money from their work. It makes you wonder!
